Automated payment reminders for Shopify B2B: built-in, apps or n8n (Net 30 without a monthly fee)

If you sell to businesses on Net 30 or Net 60, someone has to chase the unpaid invoices. Shopify can send some payment reminders on its own, and several apps add more. This guide compares Shopify's built-in reminders, payment reminder apps and an n8n workflow you pay for once, so you can pick the one that fits how many invoices you chase.

Short answer: Shopify's own reminders are free, but they start only on the due date and tell the customer, not you. Apps with several reminders per invoice cost about $13–$49 a month (checked October 2026). An n8n workflow adds a reminder before the due date and a daily report of who owes you what, for $29 once, running on your own n8n.

What Shopify does on its own

On orders with payment terms, Shopify can email payment reminders to the customer:

On the due date, and then up to 30 days after it, with at most 5 reminders per order.
To the customer only. On B2B orders, Shopify Flow's "Send payment reminder" action reaches only the company's main contact, not their accounts team.
Nothing before the due date. A buyer hears about an invoice for the first time when it's already due.
No report for you. The order status changes to Overdue, but nothing tells you each morning who owes what.

For a store with a handful of B2B customers, that can be enough: turn it on and check the Overdue filter in Orders once a week.

Over a year, an app with several reminders per invoice costs about $156 (Upright) to $588 (Onopo Growth).

What an n8n workflow does instead

n8n is an automation tool you can self-host for free or use on n8n Cloud. Our Payment Terms Reminders workflow runs once a morning:

Finds every unpaid order on payment terms in Shopify, with its due date.
Sends a reminder before the due date (3 days before by default), so the invoice is in the payment run before it's late.
Sends due-today and overdue reminders on the days you choose (by default on the due date and 7, 14 and 30 days after), with the amount, due date and your payment instructions. Replies go to your accounts address.
Emails you one report (and optionally posts it to Slack): every overdue order with days overdue and totals, and what falls due in the next 7 days.
Optional credit check: when a buyer who already has an overdue order places a new one, you get an alert and the order is tagged credit-hold, so nobody ships it by mistake.

If you keep Shopify's own reminders switched on, turn off the overdue reminders in one of the two, or buyers get two emails on the same day.

Stay with Shopify's own if you have a few B2B customers and check the Overdue filter yourself.

Pick an app if you want a buyer portal or credit limits managed inside Shopify, and don't run n8n.

FAQ

Is there automated payment reminder software built into Shopify? Yes, for orders with payment terms: Shopify emails the customer on the due date and up to 30 days after it. It doesn't remind before the due date or report to you.

Do payment reminders work without Shopify Plus? Payment terms on B2B companies need a plan that includes Shopify's B2B features. Draft orders with payment terms work on any plan, and the n8n workflow reads both.

Can reminders go to accounts payable instead of the buyer? Shopify's reminders go to the customer on the order. If the buyer isn't the person who pays, send your invoices to accounts payable as well; see how to send Shopify B2B invoices to accounts payable.

Will the buyer get two reminders? Only if Shopify's overdue reminders and another tool's are both on. Keep one of them for overdue reminders.
